7 min read Intermediate

ARIN (American Registry for Internet Numbers) is the Regional Internet Registry (RIR) responsible for managing IP addresses and ASNs in North America and parts of the Caribbean.

ARIN's Role

ARIN allocates and manages IPv4 and IPv6 address space, assigns ASNs, and maintains the WHOIS database for its service region.

As a nonprofit member-based organization, ARIN develops policies through community consensus and ensures fair resource distribution.

IPv4 Transfers Through ARIN

ARIN facilitates IPv4 address transfers through its transfer policy. Organizations can buy, sell, or lease IPv4 addresses with ARIN's approval.

1

The seller and the recipient each maintain accounts with ARIN and pass officer attestation.

2

The recipient submits a transfer request and, where required by NRPM 8.3, demonstrates 24-month need.

3

Both parties sign the transfer paperwork, including the Officer Acknowledgement and any inter-RIR forms under NRPM 8.4.

4

ARIN updates the Whois record with the new holder, after which the recipient can configure ROAs and begin announcement.

Working with ARIN Resources

If you're leasing or purchasing ARIN-registered IP addresses, the transfer or authorization must comply with ARIN policies.
